IL BIELLESE

Ex FABBRICA RIVETTI – One Factory, One History

HOPE FOR BIELLESE TEXTILE

History

Founded in 1872 by Giuseppe Rivetti as Lanificio Giuseppe Rivetti & Figli, (following the father and son Rivetti Wool Mill founded in 1866 by the Rivetti-Badone branch) with the opening of the first factory in Mosso, municipality of province of Biella, in 1879 already had 3 factories (PianezzeCallabianaVallemosso), then combined in a single plant a Biella, in 1886, in today's Piazza Cernaia. With the '900, the company becomes Lanificio Rivetti S.A. and begins to specialize in the production of cascami di rayon.

In 1950 founded a Firenze the society Lini e Lane, then settled in Maratea, with the help of Cassa del Mezzogiorno..  Dal 1962 with the first signs of the industrial crisis and the death of Oreste Rivetti (so influential that it seems to have imposed the deviation of the Torino-Milano highway, to pass by Santhià and Carisio, to facilitate Biella traffic) the decline of the company begins and ends in 1971 with the end of industrial production and the history of the wool mills. From the 1952, the year the other brothers had sold their shares in the wool mills to invest in GFT, he was left alone at the helm of the family industry.

The only company in the industrial complex to continue its activities up to half of the '90s it was the ex Pettinature Rivetti S.A., sold to Nuova Pettinature Riunite S.p.A.. Born in 1939 always within the homonymous group with production located in the adjoining plant in Via Carso, designed by Giuseppe Pagano. Subsequently, it becomes Pettinatura San Paolo S.p.A., 50% owned by IMI, in 1971 it had been the subject of a parliamentary question (4-19500, Hon. Tempia Valenta) which defined it quite technologically developed and which has highly qualified workerswithout excessive decreases in work orders. Furthermore, the company was alleged to be in the sights of IFI e Samgai, controlled by Fiat.

The vast industrial complex extended from today's Via Repubblica to Via Carso, for a total of 47,000 m² and a current value of buildings and land of 4 million euros. In 1987 a section of the complex was demolished for the construction of a new road, making the buildings in Via Repubblica and Via Carso two distinct entities.

If the industrial area along Via Carso is completely abandoned and exposed to decay, one of the two buildings located in Via Repubblica (owned by municipal and freely given to the community who carried out the work) and renamed Palazzo Rivetti: the works were abandoned as regards the renovation of the second property, following the failture of the winning company of contract, also owner of the industrial complex in via Carso, as she had presented a financially unsustainable intervention plan, thus finding herself with a large real estate property in hand that could not be economically exploited and burdened by debts contracted with various credit institutions.

Projects are being studied for the construction of a multi-storey car park in the parking area of the two buildings in Via Repubblica and a negotiation by the Municipality of Biella to repurchase the wool mill area in Via Carso
